Biography
Abebe Bikila was an Ethiopian long-distance runner born on August 7, 1932. He is best known for winning the gold medal in the marathon at the 1960 Rome Olympics, where he made history as the first Sub-Saharan African to win an Olympic gold medal. Notably, Bikila achieved this remarkable feat while running barefoot, finishing the race in a time of 2:15:16.
Bikila successfully defended his Olympic title at the 1964 Tokyo Games, becoming the first athlete to win consecutive Olympic marathon titles. Competing in shoes for the first time in Tokyo, he set a new world record with a time of 2:12:11, further solidifying his status as one of the greatest distance runners of his era. Throughout his career, he became a symbol of national pride in Ethiopia and a pioneer for African athletes on the global stage.
Tragically, Bikila's career was cut short by a car accident in 1969 that left him an amputee. Despite his physical challenges, he continued to inspire others until his death in 1973.
