Biography
Al Attles, born on November 7, 1936, in Newark, New Jersey, is a former professional basketball player and coach, celebrated for his significant contributions to the sport. He played college basketball at North Carolina A&T State University before being selected by the Philadelphia Warriors in the 1955 NBA Draft. Attles established himself as a tenacious guard, known for his defensive prowess and leadership on the court, playing a key role in the Warriors' run to the NBA Championship in 1967.
After concluding his playing career in 1969, Attles transitioned to coaching, taking the helm of the Golden State Warriors in 1970. He became the first African American coach to win an NBA championship, leading the Warriors to victory in 1975, a feat that underscored his acumen as a coach.
