Andrés Gómez, born on February 27, 1960, in Guayaquil, Ecuador, is a former professional tennis player who is best known for his achievements on the ATP Tour during the 1980s. A right-handed player known for his powerful baseline game, Gómez reached his highest singles ranking of world No. 4 in 1990. He built a successful career, earning a reputation as one of Ecuador’s finest athletes.
Gómez’s most significant career highlight came in 1990 when he won the French Open, defeating American champion and world No. 1, Andre Agassi, in the final. This victory made him the first Ecuadorian player to win a Grand Slam singles title and solidified his status in tennis history. In addition to his Grand Slam success, Gómez recorded several ATP singles titles and excelled in doubles, achieving a career-high ranking of No. 5.
