AS Irani, full name Abid Ali Irani, was a prominent Indian cricketer born on March 18, 1932, in Kangan, India. He made significant contributions to Indian cricket as a right-handed batsman and a skillful medium-fast bowler. Irani debuted in first-class cricket in the 1951-52 season and quickly established himself as a key player for his state team, Bombay, excelling in domestic competitions throughout the 1950s and 1960s.
Irani's international career spanned from 1955 to 1965, during which he represented India in 29 Test matches. His notable achievements include scoring over 1,000 runs in Test cricket, with his highest score being 194 against New Zealand in 1965. Additionally, he was part of India’s first-ever Test victory against England in 1952 and played pivotal roles in various series, leaving a lasting impact on the team's performance during his tenure.
In recognition of his contributions to cricket, the BCCI awarded the prestigious Irani Cup in his honor, highlighting the significance of his legacy in Indian cricket.
