He began his career in the Western Hockey League (WHL) with the Saskatoon Blades before being drafted in the fourth round, 93rd overall, by the Washington Capitals in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. Holtby made his NHL debut during the 2010-11 season and quickly established himself as a starting goaltender.

Holtby's career is highlighted by his exceptional performance during the 2015-16 NHL season, when he led the league in both wins and shutouts, earning the Vezina Trophy as the league's top goaltender. He played a crucial role in the Capitals' success, culminating in their first Stanley Cup victory in 2018, where he was instrumental in the team's playoff run, earning the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player of the playoffs.
