He was a right-handed batsman and occasional wicketkeeper who played predominantly for Warwickshire County Cricket Club during his professional career. Povey made significant contributions to his team, particularly during the late 1980s and early 1990s, when Warwickshire secured multiple domestic titles.
Over his career, Povey played a total of 164 first-class matches, amassing over 7,000 runs at an average of 34.55, including 11 centuries.
