Biography
DeMeco Ryans, born on July 28, 1984, in Bessemer, Alabama, is a former professional American football linebacker and current coach in the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at the University of Alabama, where he garnered attention for his exceptional defensive skills and leadership on the field. Ryans was selected by the Houston Texans in the second round of the 2006 NFL Draft, quickly establishing himself as a vital component of the team’s defense.
During his NFL playing career, Ryans spent six seasons with the Texans before joining the Philadelphia Eagles in 2012. He earned numerous accolades, including being named the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2006 and receiving Pro Bowl selections in 2007 and 2009. Ryans was known for his strong tackling ability, field intelligence, and leadership qualities, ultimately finishing his playing career in 2015 with 636 total tackles and 16.5 sacks.
Following his retirement, Ryans transitioned into coaching, taking on significant roles in various organizations. He served as the linebacker coach for the San Francisco 49ers and was instrumental in developing a strong defensive unit. In January 2023, he was appointed as the head coach of the Texans, becoming the team's second African American head coach, which underscores his legacy both on and off the field as he continues to influence the next generation of players.
