Derek Smith, born on January 18, 1975, in the United States, is a former professional American football linebacker. He played college football at the University of California, Berkeley, where he earned a reputation for his exceptional athleticism and defensive skills. After an impressive collegiate career, he was selected in the fourth round of the 1997 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers.
Smith spent the majority of his NFL career with the 49ers, contributing significantly to the team's defensive lineup from 1997 to 2002.
