Deron Cherry, born on September 12, 1959, in Shawnee Mission, Kansas, is a former professional American football player recognized for his role as a free safety in the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at the University of Kansas before entering the league. Cherry was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Kansas City Chiefs in 1981, where he quickly established himself as a key defensive player.
During his 11-year NFL career, Cherry garnered significant accolades, including being selected to the Pro Bowl three times (1983, 1984, 1986) and earning All-Pro honors in 1986. He is best known for his partnership with other notable players in the Chiefs' secondary, contributing to the team's overall defensive strength in the 1980s.
