Don Shula (January 4, 1930 – May 4, 2020) was a prominent American football coach and player, best known for his tenure as the head coach of the Miami Dolphins in the National Football League (NFL). Born in Grand River, Ohio, Shula began his professional football career as a defensive back for the Cleveland Browns and later the Baltimore Colts. He transitioned to coaching in 1963 and quickly made a name for himself, leading the Colts to a successful season and their first Super Bowl appearance.
Shula's most renowned achievement came during the 1972 season when he coached the Dolphins to a perfect 17-0 record, culminating in a victory in Super Bowl VII. This accomplishment made the Dolphins the only team in NFL history to complete a season without a loss or tie, cementing Shula's legacy as one of the game's greatest coaches. Over his 33-year coaching career, Shula amassed an impressive record of 347 wins, making him the winningest coach in NFL history until 2020.
