Biography
Duleep Mendis (born August 25, 1952) is a former Sri Lankan cricketer celebrated for his significant contributions to the sport during the 1970s and 1980s. Mendis made his Test debut for Sri Lanka in 1982 and quickly established himself as a prominent batsman, known for his elegant stroke play and solid technique. He was a key figure in the development of Sri Lankan cricket during its formative years on the international stage.
Throughout his career, Mendis played in 24 Test matches, accumulating over 1,000 runs at an average of 42.14, including 3 centuries and 5 half-centuries. He also participated in One Day Internationals (ODIs), where he was part of the team that initiated Sri Lanka's ascent in world cricket, ultimately contributing to their victory in the 1996 ICC Cricket World Cup. His performances helped elevate the profile of Sri Lankan cricket and inspired future generations of players.
