Biography
Dwight Clark (born January 8, 1957) was an American football wide receiver who played the majority of his career with the San Francisco 49ers in the National Football League (NFL). He was drafted in the 10th round of the 1979 NFL Draft after playing college football at Clemson University. Over his career, he became known for his exceptional skills, leading to significant contributions to the 49ers' success during the 1980s.
Clark is best remembered for his role in the historic "Catch"—a memorable game-winning touchdown reception from quarterback Joe Montana during the 1981 NFC Championship Game against the Dallas Cowboys. This moment solidified his legacy and helped propel the 49ers to their first Super Bowl victory in Super Bowl XVI. Throughout his NFL career, Clark was selected to the Pro Bowl twice and finished with over 5,000 receiving yards and 48 touchdowns.
After retiring from professional football in 1987, Dwight Clark remained involved with the NFL, later serving in various front office roles for the 49ers. His impact on the game, especially in the context of the 49ers’ rise to prominence, is widely recognized, and he is celebrated as one of the franchise's all-time greats.
