Biography
Earl Morrall, born on May 17, 1934, in Muskegon, Michigan, was a prominent American football quarterback who enjoyed a successful career in the National Football League (NFL) spanning from 1956 to 1978. After playing college football at Michigan State University, Morrall was selected in the first round of the 1956 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers. He subsequently played for multiple teams, including the New York Giants, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Miami Dolphins, where he became well-known for his resilience and adaptability as a backup quarterback.
Morrall is best remembered for his pivotal role in the Miami Dolphins' perfect season in 1972, serving as the starting quarterback for the majority of that year after taking over for the injured Bob Griese. His leadership and performance helped the Dolphins achieve an undefeated record, culminating in a victory in Super Bowl VII. Throughout his career, Morrall displayed remarkable consistency, completing over 1,800 passes and accumulating more than 21,000 passing yards and 161 touchdowns.
After retiring from professional football, Morrall's contributions to the sport were recognized by his induction into the New York Giants Ring of Honor in 2010. He left a lasting legacy as one of the game's great quarterbacks, particularly noted for his clutch performances and ability to step up in critical situations.
