Biography
Eddie Sachs, born on May 28, 1927, in Richmond, Indiana, was an American racing driver known for his participation in the Indianapolis 500 and Formula 1. He began his racing career in midget cars and sprint cars before transitioning to national prominence in the mid-1950s. Sachs achieved notable success in USAC Championships, quickly establishing himself as a competitive driver on the American motorsport scene.
Sachs is perhaps best remembered for his exploits at the Indianapolis 500, having competed in the prestigious event 15 times between 1952 and 1964. He famously finished in the top ten several times, with his best placing a memorable second place in 1961. In addition to his achievements in IndyCar, Sachs made several appearances in Formula 1, participating in the 1961 and 1962 seasons, where he contributed to the growth and international appeal of American drivers in the sport.
Tragically, Eddie Sachs's career was cut short when he died in a horrific crash during the 1964 Indianapolis 500, which also claimed the life of fellow driver Dave MacDonald.
