Biography
Ernest "Ernie" Stautner was a German-born professional American football player, born on April 20, 1925, in Landau, Germany. He emigrated to the United States after World War II and began his football career at the University of Pittsburgh, where he became known for his defensive skills. Stautner was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the second round of the 1946 NFL Draft, beginning a notable career in the National Football League (NFL).
Stautner played as a defensive tackle for the Pittsburgh Steelers from 1946 to 1959, earning eight Pro Bowl selections over his 13-year career. He was recognized for his tenacity on the field, becoming a key part of the Steelers’ defense and earning All-Pro honors multiple times. His contributions helped shape the team's identity during a challenging era before the franchise achieved greater success in later decades.
After retiring from professional play, Stautner transitioned into coaching, serving in various capacities at the collegiate level and in the NFL.
