Biography
Frank Beamer, born on October 18, 1946, is a former American football player and coach, best known for his significant contribution to Virginia Tech's football program. A defensive back at Virginia Tech from 1965 to 1968, Beamer transitioned into coaching after graduating, starting his career at the high school level before moving to collegiate football. His coaching tenure began at the University of Maryland and included various positions before he was appointed head coach at Virginia Tech in 1987.
Under Beamer's leadership, Virginia Tech transformed into a competitive program, highlighted by consistent bowl game appearances and the establishment of a formidable defense. Notably, his teams made a significant impact during the late 1990s, culminating in a national championship appearance in the 2000 Sugar Bowl, where they faced Florida State University. Beamer's coaching style emphasized special teams, leading to the popularization of the "Beamer Ball" philosophy, which incorporated aggressive special teams play.
Beamer retired in 2016 after 29 seasons at Virginia Tech, leaving behind a legacy of excellence that includes over 280 career wins and numerous conference championships. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2018, honoring his impact on the sport and his ability to develop young athletes both on and off the field.
