He played for the American Basketball Association's (ABA) New Orleans Jazz during the 1974-1975 season, making significant contributions to the team's early development. Prior to his professional career, Layden showcased his talent at the college level, playing for the University of Notre Dame where he was known for his scoring ability and leadership on the court.

He served as head coach for the Utah Jazz from 1981 to 1984, leading the team to its first-ever playoff appearance in 1984.
