Biography
Frank Sugg, born on January 11, 1862, in Edgbaston, Birmingham, was a prominent English cricketer who achieved notable success as a left-handed batsman and right-arm slow bowler. He made his debut for Warwickshire in 1880 and quickly garnered attention for his all-round capabilities. Sugg's playing style and technique allowed him to excel, and he became a key player for the county throughout the 1880s and 1890s.
In first-class cricket, Sugg is remembered for amassing over 10,000 runs and taking more than 1,500 wickets during his career. His best individual performance with the bat came when he scored 198 runs against Yorkshire in 1888, while with the ball, his best figures were 8 for 43 against Kent in 1894. Sugg was also a valuable member of the England national team, representing his country in four Test matches from 1884 to 1886, where he showcased his talent and contributed to the team’s efforts during the early years of international cricket.
Following his retirement from playing, Frank Sugg continued to be involved in cricket as a coach and also served as an umpire. His legacy is marked by his contributions to Warwickshire and his influence on the development of future cricketers. Sugg passed away on April 30, 1932, but remains a respected figure in the annals of English cricket history, remembered for his all-round skills and dedication to the sport.
