Biography
Fred Gehrke (April 24, 1918 – December 22, 2021) was an American football player and a pivotal figure in the history of the National Football League (NFL). A talented running back and later a coach, he played for the Los Angeles Rams from 1941 to 1943 and again in 1945 after serving in the United States Army during World War II. Gehrke was known for his versatile playing style and was part of the Rams team that helped popularize the use of the single-bar face mask.
In addition to his contributions on the field, Gehrke is renowned for his innovative spirit, having designed the first modern football helmet that incorporated a face mask. This design not only enhanced player safety but also influenced the evolution of football equipment. Throughout his NFL career, Gehrke demonstrated exceptional skill, having been selected for the NFL All-Star Game in 1942.
