Gale Catlett, born on October 31, 1940, is a former professional basketball player and coach from the United States. He played college basketball at the University of West Virginia, where he was a standout performer and earned All-American honors in 1962. After graduating, Catlett entered the professional sphere, playing for the Cincinnati Royals in the NBA during the early 1960s.

Following his playing career, which was cut short by injuries, Catlett transitioned to coaching, beginning with a successful tenure at the University of Charleston, where he led the team to multiple conference championships. In 1978, he took over as head coach at West Virginia University, where he achieved significant success, including multiple NCAA tournament appearances and a memorable run to the NCAA Sweet 16 in 1982.
