Gary Ayres, born on September 28, 1960, is a former Australian Rules footballer who played for the Hawthorn Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). Over his distinguished career from 1978 to 1993, he established himself as a prominent defender, known for his exceptional skills and tactical awareness on the field. Ayres played a crucial role in Hawthorn's success during the 1980s and early 1990s, contributing to four premiership victories in 1986, 1988, 1989, and 1991.
Throughout his career, Ayres was recognized for his individual talent, earning the Norm Smith Medal in 1986 for his outstanding performance in the Grand Final. He was honored with All-Australian selection in 1988, showcasing his status as one of the best players in the league. Ayres’ reliability and consistency saw him play a total of 251 games for the Hawks, solidifying his legacy as one of the club's greats.
