Biography
George McAfee was born on March 13, 1918, in Winder, Georgia. He played college football at Duke University, where he distinguished himself as a dynamic halfback and kick returner. After a standout college career, McAfee was selected by the Chicago Bears in the first round of the 1940 NFL Draft.
During his tenure with the Bears from 1940 to 1941 and later from 1945 to 1947, McAfee emerged as one of the premier players in the NFL, showcasing exceptional speed and agility. He was a key contributor to the Bears' success in the early 1940s, helping the team secure an NFL Championship in 1940. McAfee’s playing style and versatility also earned him three Pro Bowl selections and recognition as a First-Team All-Pro multiple times.
After retiring from professional football, McAfee left a lasting legacy as one of the game's early stars and was subsequently inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1960. His contributions to the sport continued to be recognized posthumously, as he is remembered not only for his athletic achievements but also for his impact on the evolution of the running back position in the NFL. McAfee passed away on August 16, 2022, leaving behind a rich legacy in American football history.
