Biography
George Seifert, born on January 22, 1940, in San Francisco, California, is a former professional American football coach and player. He played college football at the University of Utah before embarking on a coaching career that began as a defensive backs coach at the University of California, Berkeley. Seifert transitioned to the NFL as an assistant coach with the San Francisco 49ers in 1981.
Seifert became the head coach of the 49ers in 1989, succeeding legendary coach Bill Walsh. During his tenure, he led the team to two Super Bowl victories in Super Bowl XXIV (1990) and Super Bowl XXV (1995), becoming the first coach in NFL history to win a Super Bowl in his first season. He was known for his innovative strategies and successfully developing a roster filled with Hall of Fame talent.
After leaving the 49ers, Seifert served as head coach for the Carolina Panthers, where he guided the team to a division title in 1996 and the NFC Championship in 1996. His coaching career, highlighted by a total of 114 regular-season victories and his status as a two-time Super Bowl champion, has solidified his legacy as one of the prominent figures in NFL history.
