Biography
Gundappa Viswanath, born on February 12, 1949, in Mysore, India, is a former cricketer who represented India from 1969 to 1983. Renowned for his elegant batting style and solid technique, Viswanath earned a reputation as one of India's leading batsmen during his career. He made his Test debut against Australia in 1969 and went on to play 91 Test matches, scoring 6,473 runs at an average of 41.93, including 14 centuries.
Viswanath's career is marked by several memorable performances, most notably his role in India's famous win against the West Indies at the Port of Spain in 1976, where he scored a magnificent 112 runs. He was also instrumental in India's victory in the 1983 Cricket World Cup, contributing to the team's historic triumph. In addition to his Test career, Viswanath played 25 One Day Internationals (ODIs), amassing 839 runs and showcasing his adaptability in the shorter format of the game.
After retiring from international cricket, Viswanath continued to influence the sport as a coach and selector, helping to nurture future generations of Indian cricketers.
