Biography
Hedley Verity was an English cricketer born on May 18, 1905, in Birstwith, Yorkshire. He is best remembered for his exceptional left-arm orthodox spin bowling and astute batting capabilities, which made him a key player for Yorkshire County Cricket Club and the England national team during the 1930s. Verity made his first-class debut in 1926 and quickly established himself as one of the leading bowlers of his era.
Throughout his career, Verity achieved significant success, including taking 1,956 wickets at an impressive average of 14.90 in first-class cricket, making him one of the most economical bowlers in the history of the sport. His notable performances include a remarkable feat of taking 10 wickets for just 10 runs against Nottinghamshire in 1932, a record that stands as a testament to his skill and precision. Verity also represented England in 40 Test matches from 1930 to 1939, securing 144 wickets and contributing vital runs down the order.
Verity's legacy is preserved through both his remarkable statistics and the influence he had on future generations of cricketers.
