Ilya Kovalchuk, born on April 15, 1983, in Tver, Russia, is a former professional ice hockey player widely regarded for his offensive prowess and powerful shot. He began his career in the Russian junior leagues before being selected first overall by the Atlanta Thrashers in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft.
