James John Corbett, born on September 1, 1866, in San Francisco, California, was an American professional boxer who is best known for becoming the first heavyweight champion of the gloved era. He gained prominence in the 1890s, notable for his innovative boxing style which emphasized speed and agility, in contrast to the more brute force approach of his predecessors. Corbett's most significant victory came on September 7, 1892, when he defeated John L. Sullivan in what is regarded as the first heavyweight championship bout under modern rules, thus earning the title of World Heavyweight Champion.
