Jay Bouwmeester was born on September 27, 1983, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. A highly-regarded defenseman, he gained prominence in junior hockey with the Medicine Hat Tigers in the Western Hockey League (WHL), where he was selected third overall in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft by the Florida Panthers.
