Jay Paterno is a former American football player and coach, best known for his tenure as an assistant coach at Penn State University. Born on December 1, 1969, in State College, Pennsylvania, he is the son of former Penn State head coach Joe Paterno. Jay played college football as a quarterback at Brown University, where he set several school records and earned a degree in history.
Following his playing career, Paterno transitioned into coaching, beginning as a graduate assistant at Penn State in 1995. He later became the quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator, contributing to the development of several notable NFL players, including Christian Hackenberg and Trace McSorley. Under his guidance, the Penn State offense became known for its high-scoring capabilities and innovative schemes.
