Biography
Jeff Blashill, born on December 10, 1973, in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, is a former professional ice hockey player and a prominent coach known for his work in the NHL. He played as a goaltender during his collegiate career at Ferris State University, where he achieved All-America honors and helped elevate the program’s profile. Upon completing his college career, Blashill transitioned to coaching, initially focusing on developing younger talent.
Blashill began his coaching career in the junior leagues, achieving success with the Indiana Ice in the USHL, where he secured a championship and earned Coach of the Year honors. His reputation as a skilled developer of players led to an assistant coaching position with the Western Michigan University hockey team and later a head coaching role in the AHL with the Grand Rapids Griffins. Under his leadership, the Griffins won the Calder Cup in 2017, solidifying his status as a top-level coach.
In 2015, Blashill was named the head coach of the NHL's Detroit Red Wings, succeeding Mike Babcock.
