Biography
Joe Delaney, born on October 30, 1958, in Hawthorne, California, was a professional American football running back who played in the National Football League (NFL) for the Kansas City Chiefs. Delaney attended Louisiana Tech University, where he achieved significant success on the field, earning All-American honors. He was selected by the Chiefs in the third round of the 1981 NFL Draft, marking the beginning of a promising career.
During his time with the Chiefs, Delaney quickly gained recognition for his exceptional athleticism and playmaking abilities. In his rookie season, he rushed for a remarkable 1,121 yards and scored seven touchdowns, earning him the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award. His most notable achievement came in 1983 when he was named to the Pro Bowl, solidifying his status as one of the league's top running backs.
Tragically, Delaney's life was cut short when he drowned while attempting to save three children in a pond on June 29, 2000, at the age of 41. His heroic actions showcased his character off the field and have since become a significant part of his legacy, inspiring the creation of the Joe Delaney Memorial Fund, which supports education and wellness initiatives for children.
