Biography
Joseph Robert Theismann, born on September 9, 1949, in New Brunswick, New Jersey, is a former professional American football quarterback. He attended the University of Notre Dame, where he gained recognition for his dynamic playing style and leadership abilities. After being drafted by the Miami Dolphins in the 1971 NFL Draft, Theismann was soon signed by the Ottawa Rough Riders of the Canadian Football League, where he won a Grey Cup Championship in 1976.
In 1974, Theismann returned to the NFL, joining the Washington Redskins, where he would solidify his legacy as one of the franchise's greatest quarterbacks. He led the team to victory in Super Bowl XVII in 1983, earning Super Bowl MVP honors. Over his career, he was selected for two Pro Bowls and won the NFL Most Valuable Player award in 1983, showcasing his skill and impact on the field.
Theismann's career was cut short by a severe leg injury in 1985, but his influence on the game has endured. He is known for his broadcasting career following retirement, where he served as a sports commentator and analyst.
