Biography
John Madden was an American football coach and sportscaster, born on April 10, 1936, in Austin, Minnesota. He played college football at the University of Oregon and later transferred to California Polytechnic State University, where he earned his degree. Madden was drafted by the NFL's Philadelphia Eagles in 1958 but suffered a career-ending injury during training camp, which led him to transition into coaching.
Madden began his coaching career at San Diego State University before joining the Oakland Raiders as a linebackers coach in 1967. In 1969, he became the head coach of the Raiders, a position he held until 1978. During his tenure, Madden led the team to a Super Bowl victory in 1976 and established a remarkable coaching record, becoming the youngest head coach to win 100 career games at the time.
Following his coaching career, Madden became a prominent television sports commentator, known for his colorful personality and deep understanding of the game. His influence extended beyond the field as he lent his name to the popular Madden NFL video game series, which has become a staple in sports gaming.
