Joseph Yobo is a retired Nigerian footballer, born on September 6, 1980, in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. Primarily a defender, Yobo began his professional career at 17 with the Nigerian club Eaglets before moving to Europe to join Marseille in 1998. He later had prominent spells at clubs such as Standard Liège, Werder Bremen, and Everton, where he became a fan favorite and a key figure in the defense.
Yobo's international career with the Nigeria national team spanned from 2001 to 2014. He earned over 100 caps and represented Nigeria in three FIFA World Cups (2002, 2010, and 2014) as well as successes in the Africa Cup of Nations, notably winning the tournament in 2013. His leadership on and off the pitch culminated in him serving as captain of the national team during his later years.
After retiring from professional football, Yobo transitioned into coaching and sports administration, continuing to contribute to Nigerian football.
