Biography
Len Dawson was an American professional football quarterback, born on June 20, 1935, in Alliance, Ohio. He played collegiate football at Purdue University before entering the NFL, where he was selected in the first round of the 1957 draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers. After a brief stint in Pittsburgh, he gained prominence after joining the American Football League (AFL) with the Dallas Texans in 1962, later moving to the Kansas City Chiefs.
Dawson enjoyed a successful career with the Chiefs, leading the team to three AFL championships and a victory in Super Bowl IV, where he was named the game’s Most Valuable Player. He was selected to the Pro Bowl multiple times and was recognized for his exceptional passing accuracy and leadership on the field. His influence was instrumental in helping to elevate the prestige of both the AFL and the NFL during their merger.
After retiring from professional play in 1975, Len Dawson transitioned to a successful career in sports broadcasting, becoming a respected commentator. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1987, solidifying his legacy as one of the top quarterbacks in football history. Dawson remains a celebrated figure in Kansas City and is remembered for his contributions to the sport and his role in the Chiefs' history.
