Luis Resto, born on June 11, 1955, in Moca, Puerto Rico, is a former professional boxer who gained prominence in the 1980s. Resto began his boxing career in the early 1970s and competed primarily in the welterweight division. Over his career, he amassed a record of 28 wins, including 17 by knockout, against 6 losses.
Resto is perhaps best known for his controversial bout against Billy Collins Jr. on June 13, 1983. In this match, Resto's corner allegedly tampered with his gloves, resulting in an uneven fight that led to severe injuries for Collins, who suffered a detached retina. The scandal surrounding this fight led to widespread outrage in the boxing community, resulting in Resto's subsequent ban from the sport and significant changes to boxing regulations regarding glove inspection and fighter safety.
