Born on January 15, 1985, in Chicago, Illinois, Smydra gained recognition during his collegiate career at the University of Kentucky, where he played from 2003 to 2007. He was a key contributor to the Wildcats' appearance in the NCAA Tournament and helped the team secure multiple SEC championships.
