Biography
Matīss Kivlenieks was a Latvian ice hockey goaltender, born on August 26, 1996, in Riga, Latvia. He began his professional career in the Latvian Higher League before moving to North America, where he joined the junior ranks in the United States. Kivlenieks played for several teams in the United States Hockey League (USHL) before being signed by the Columbus Blue Jackets of the National Hockey League (NHL) in 2017.
Kivlenieks made his NHL debut with the Columbus Blue Jackets in the 2020-2021 season, showcasing his talent with notable performances that highlighted his potential as a future star in the league. He recorded his first NHL victory on January 20, 2021, against the Tampa Bay Lightning, becoming a promising figure in the Blue Jackets' goaltending roster. Kivlenieks earned recognition for his skillful playstyle and leadership qualities, representing Latvia in international competitions, including the IIHF World Championship.
Tragically, Matīss Kivlenieks passed away on July 4, 2021, at the age of 24 in a fireworks accident.
