Matt Benning, born on May 25, 1994, is a professional ice hockey defenseman from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. He played junior hockey with the Spruce Grove Saints in the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) before attending Boston University, where he competed for the Terriers from 2012 to 2016. Benning's collegiate performance earned him a nomination for the Hockey East All-Rookie Team in his first year, and he concluded his NCAA career with 55 points in 124 games.
Following his tenure in college hockey, Benning signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Edmonton Oilers in 2016. He made his NHL debut during the 2016-17 season, contributing to the Oilers' playoff push that year, which marked their first postseason appearance since 2006.
