Matt Greene, born on May 13, 1983, in Grand Ledge, Michigan, is a former professional ice hockey defenseman known for his physical style of play and leadership on the ice. He played junior hockey in the United States Hockey League for the Sioux City Musketeers before advancing to collegiate hockey at the University of North Dakota, where he helped the Fighting Hawks win the NCAA championship in 2000. Greene was selected in the second round, 44th overall, by the New York Rangers in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.
Greene made his NHL debut with the New York Rangers during the 2005-06 season, but he gained greater recognition after being traded to the Los Angeles Kings in 2006.
