Biography
Matt Rhule, born on January 31, 1975, in New York City, is an American football coach and former player, known for his impactful roles at the collegiate and professional levels. He initially played as a linebacker at Penn State University from 1993 to 1997 before transitioning to coaching shortly after graduating. Rhule’s coaching career began as an assistant coach at various colleges, eventually leading to head coaching positions at Temple University and Baylor University.
During his tenure at Temple from 2013 to 2016, Rhule revitalized the struggling program, leading the Owls to a 10-win season in 2016 and their first American Athletic Conference championship. He further enhanced his coaching reputation at Baylor University from 2017 to 2019, transforming the Bears into a competitive team that saw significant improvement, culminating in a Big 12 Championship Game appearance in 2019. Rhule was recognized for his ability to build strong programs and develop players both on and off the field.
In January 2020, Rhule was appointed head coach of the Carolina Panthers in the National Football League (NFL), symbolizing a transition from college football to the professional arena.
