Matt Smaby is an American former professional ice hockey defenseman, born on October 14, 1984, in Bloomington, Minnesota. He was selected in the second round, 41st overall, by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft. Smaby played junior hockey in the United States Hockey League (USHL) for the Sioux Falls Stampede before furthering his career at the University of Minnesota-Duluth, where he showcased his skills as a standout defenseman.
Smaby made his NHL debut during the 2007-08 season with the Tampa Bay Lightning and played a total of 43 games with the team over parts of four seasons.
