Biography
Mattias Öhlund, born on September 9, 1976, in Piteå, Sweden, is a former professional ice hockey defenseman renowned for his solid two-way play and leadership on the ice. Öhlund began his career in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL), where he emerged as a standout player with Modo Hockey, showcasing his skills before transitioning to the National Hockey League (NHL).
In 1997, Öhlund was selected by the Vancouver Canucks in the third round of the NHL Entry Draft. He played a significant role with the Canucks from 1998 to 2008, earning a reputation as a reliable defenseman, and later played for the Tampa Bay Lightning until his retirement in 2012. Throughout his NHL career, Öhlund recorded over 300 points and was part of several successful playoff campaigns, notably contributing to the Canucks' run to the Stanley Cup Final in 2011.
Öhlund also represented Sweden at the international level, winning gold medals at the IIHF World Championships in 1998 and 2006, and playing a pivotal role in securing the country’s historic victory at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin.
