Born on September 15, 1995, in San Diego, California, Sanders quickly gained recognition during her high school years at La Jolla High School, where she led her team to the state championships. She was a McDonald's All-American nominee and garnered several accolades, including being named to the All-State First Team.
After high school, Sanders played college basketball for the University of North Carolina, where she had a standout career from 2013 to 2017. During her time with the Tar Heels, she played in over 130 games, averaging 18.4 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game. Sanders was instrumental in leading her team to the NCAA Tournament, earning All-ACC honors in multiple seasons and establishing herself as one of the program's all-time greats.
