He played primarily as a right-handed batsman and represented Essex in first-class cricket. Hone made his debut for Essex in 1892 and participated in a total of 39 first-class matches until 1897.
Throughout his career, Hone established himself as a reliable middle-order batsman, accumulating over 1,200 runs at an average of 19.75.
