Peter Karmanos, Jr. (born March 11, 1943) is an American businessman and former ice hockey player, best known as the founder of the Carolina Hurricanes, a professional ice hockey team in the National Hockey League (NHL). He was a standout player during his collegiate career at the University of Michigan, where he developed a passion for the sport that laid the groundwork for his future contributions to hockey.
In the 1970s, Karmanos established a series of junior hockey teams, ultimately leading to the establishment of the Hartford Whalers in 1979, a franchise that would later relocate to North Carolina and become the Hurricanes in 1997.
