Born on January 23, 1965, in Los Angeles, California, he played college basketball at Brigham Young University (BYU) from 1983 to 1987, where he was a standout player for the BYU Cougars, earning All-WAC honors and helping the team reach the NCAA Tournament multiple times.

Following his successful college career, Ivory was selected in the second round of the 1987 NBA Draft by the Utah Jazz.
