Biography
R. J. Umberger, born on May 3, 1982, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is a former professional ice hockey forward known for his robust playing style and offensive skill set. He played junior hockey in the United States Hockey League (USHL) before advancing to the college level at Ohio State University, where he significantly contributed to the Buckeyes' success from 2001 to 2003. Umberger was selected in the first round, 16th overall, by the Vancouver Canucks in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft.
Umberger made his NHL debut with the Canucks during the 2003-04 season but was subsequently traded to the Philadelphia Flyers, where he developed into a prominent player. He achieved his career-high season point total during the 2006-07 season, scoring 57 points, and was an integral part of the Flyers' roster until 2008. In 2008, he signed with the Columbus Blue Jackets, where he continued to excel, achieving a career-high of 26 goals in the 2010-11 season and helping the team to its first playoff appearance.
