Biography
Rip Engle was an American football player and coach, born on March 26, 1906, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Engle played college football at Brown University, where he established himself as a talented end. Following his collegiate career, he transitioned to the professional ranks, playing in the NFL for the Portsmouth Spartans and later the Philadelphia Eagles from 1931 to 1933.
Engle's coaching career began shortly after his playing days, as he took on the role of head coach at Juniata College in 1934. He later moved to Penn State University, where he served as head coach from 1950 to 1965. Under his leadership, the team achieved significant success, including a 1962 Orange Bowl victory and multiple bowl appearances, marking Engle as a transformative figure in the program's history.
Beyond his coaching achievements, Engle is remembered for his influence on future generations of football coaches and players. He helped innovate training methods and emphasized the importance of character development in athletes.
