RM Alwis is a former Sri Lankan cricketer known for his contributions to the national team during the 1980s and 1990s. Born on October 30, 1961, in Colombo, Alwis was a right-handed batsman who also excelled as a medium-pace bowler. He made his Test debut in 1984 against Pakistan and quickly became recognized for his all-round capabilities on the field.
Throughout his career, Alwis played in 35 Test matches and 25 One Day Internationals (ODIs), accumulating significant runs and claiming crucial wickets for Sri Lanka. His notable performance includes a remarkable innings of 143 runs against New Zealand in 1987, which was pivotal in securing a Test victory for Sri Lanka. Alwis played an essential role in the national team's growth during its formative years in international cricket.
